 Abstract:  The Ford family were prominent lawyers, philanthropists, and businessmen of Cleveland, Ohio, during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The collection consists of genealogies, biographical sketches, correspondence, diaries, journals, account books, appointment books, ledgers, stock certificates, minutes, leases, articles of incorporation, wills, deeds, corporate inventories, maps, newspaper and magazine clippings, tax assessments and returns, diplomas, certificates, military orders, and discharge papers. Material is included on several banking institutions, including Garfield Savings Bank, The Western Reserve Trust Company, Metropolitan National Savings Bank, and the East End Savings and Trust Company. Material on Ford family involvement in the construction and management of the Williamson Building is included, as is family involvement in other real estate enterprises, including The New Amsterdam Company, One Euclid Company, and the Ford McCaslin Company. Involvement in various legal firms by H. Clark, Horatio, and David K. Ford is well documented, as is David K. Ford's role in the organization and operation of the Lubrizol Corporation and Lubrizol Foundation. Family involvement with the Euclid Avenue Congregational Church, and with other philanthropic and social service organizations, such as the American Red Cross, the Maternal Health Association, University Hospitals, and the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University, is documented. Family members were also involved with the Congregational City Missionary Society, the Congregational Home Missionary Society, the Schauffler Missionary Training School (later Schauffler College of Religious and Social Work), and the National Council of the Congregational Churches of the United States. David K. Ford's involvement with Defiance College is documented. David and Elizabeth Brooks Ford's commitment to community service and social reform is well documented in this collection, including correspondence with others sharing their interests, such as Ralph Hayes of the City Club, Dorothy Adams Hamilton Brush with the Maternal Health Association, Agnes Brooks Young with the Cleveland Playhouse, and Katherine Gill Brooks of the Visiting Nurse Association. Of particular interest is the correspondence of H. Clark Ford with the notorious swindler Cassie Chadwick. The majority of the genealogical and family history materials included is the work of Oliver Kingsley Brooks.

 Abstract:  The Severance family was a prominent Cleveland, Ohio, family known for its philanthropic activities. Solon Severance, a Cleveland banker, was the son of Solomon Severance and Mary Helen Long, and a brother of Louis Severance. He was also a descendent of John Walworth, an early settler of Cleveland who was a civil engineer and was appointed in 1806 as the Custom Collector for the District of Erie. Solon's wife, Emily Allen, was the daughter of Dr. Dudley Allen, and the sister of prominent surgeon Dudley P. Allen. Solon and Emily's daughter, Julia Severance Millikin, was the wife of Benjamin Millikin, a noted Cleveland opthalmologist. Julia's children included Helen Millikin Nash and Severance, Marianne, Dudley, and Louise Millikin. The collection consists of historical and biographical data on various family members; diaries and travel journals, especially of Julia Severance Millikin and her mother, Emily Allen Severance; correspondence, especially between Julia and her mother, Emily Severance; wills, genealogical notes, deeds, notices of events, and newspaper clippings. Among the correspondence are numerous letters from Julia's friends from Wells College. The collection also includes a certificate appointing John Walworth collector for the district of Erie, 1806, and a journal kept by Dudley Allen detailing early medical practice in the area. There is also material on author Samuel L. Clemens (Mark Twain) and his voyage around the world, which included Solon and Emily Severance, and became the basis of his novel "The Innocents Abroad".

 Abstract:  Frederick C. Crawford (1891-1994) was a Cleveland, Ohio, industrialist and philanthropist. Crawford headed Thompson Products, Inc. (later TRW Inc.) as it moved from an automotive and aircraft parts manufacturer into the aviation and aerospace industries. A leader of Cleveland's philanthropic community, Crawford served on the boards of many cultural institutions. He was appointed to the Western Reserve Historical Society Board of Trustees in 1944 and later served as it's president. He was instrumental in the transfer of the Thompson Auto Album and Aviation Museum collection to WRHS in the 1960s, which became the nucleus of the Frederick C. Crawford Auto-Aviation Collection of WRHS. Crawford was married twice; to Audrey Cecelia Bowles in 1932, and to Kathleen M. Saxon in 1975. The collection consists of genealogies, biographical sketches, correspondence, appointment diaries and calendars, ledgers, annual financial summaries, bank statements, trust deeds, tax assessments, returns and other financial documents, stock certificates, wills, real estate inventories, diplomas, award certificates, military discharge papers, corporate annual reports, speeches and broadcast transcripts, newspaper and magazine clippings, articles of incorporation, minutes, and scrapbooks.

It was an auxiliary of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union of Ohio. In 1886 it changed its name to the Non-Partisan Woman's Christian Temperance Union. In 1933 it became the Woman's Philanthropic Union. It was also involved in many civic and charitable activities.  Abstract:  The Jewish Community Federation is a central policy making and fundraising agency for the Jewish community of Cleveland, Ohio, which traces its origin to the Federation of the Jewish Charities of Cleveland (founded 1903). The Federation of the Jewish Charities of Cleveland changed its name to the Jewish Welfare Federation of Cleveland in 1926, and in 1930, added a fundraising arm, the Jewish Welfare Fund of Cleveland. In 1951 the Jewish Welfare Federation merged with the Jewish Community Council to become the Jewish Community Federation. The collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, trustee and committee minutes, reports, proposals, newspaper clippings, wills, and financial records. Records are organized into three series consisting of administrative files, endowment funds, and social planning and research.

 Abstract:  The Ritchie and Hale families were prominent in civic and philanthropic activities in Akron and Summit County, Ohio. Clara Belle Ritchie (1869-1956), daughter of Samuel J. and Sophronia Hale Ritchie, inherited the Hale farm from her uncle, Charles Oviatt Hale, and bequeathed it to the Western Reserve Historical Society when she died in the 1950s. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Ritchie, Hale, Cozad, Davis, and Mather family members. Also includes scenes of the Hale farm in Bath, Ohio.

 Abstract:  The George Gund Foundation is a charitable foundation established by Cleveland, Ohio, businessman and philanthropist George Gund. It supports education and various projects of community organizations located primarily in northeastern Ohio, but also in Ohio and the United States. Of particular interest to the Foundation are new teaching methods and education for disadvantaged people. The arts, civic affairs, economic development, the environment, and human services are also priorities of the Foundation. Abortion rights, women's issues, handgun control, homelessness, equal housing, museum development, retinitis pigmentosa research, AIDS public policy and education, community gardening, historic preservation, population control, family planning, and nuclear weapons control are also areas supported by the Foundation. The collection consists of grant files, which include architectural drawings, budgets, correspondence, financial statements, grant proposals, lists, newspaper clippings, one audio cassette tape, photographs, posters, press releases, publications, reports, and slides generated by the grant recipients and grant proposal forms and notes generated by The George Gund Foundation. The collection also contains limited administrative records of The George Gund Foundation, including correspondence, lists, publications, and reports related to grant recipients and a joint project with the Cleveland Public Schools based upon the effective schools model of school-based educational reform entitled Project Perform.

 Abstract:  The collection consists of photographs depicting Cleveland, Ohio, Jewish leaders and institutions used to illustrate the second edition of the History of the Jews of Cleveland by Lloyd P. Gartner, published by the Western Reserve Historical Society in 1987. Included are views of synagogues that existed in Cleveland from the mid-19th century, and portraits of the rabbis who led them. Also included are views of Jewish-operated stores and shops, including the Levy and Stearn Department store.

77Title:  Federation for Community Planning Photographs

 Abstract:  The Federation for Community Planning was founded in 1913, as the Federation for Charity and Philanthropy, to coordinate funding for the numerous charities in Cleveland, Ohio. It merged with the Welfare Council of Cleveland in 1917 to form the Cleveland Welfare Federation. In 1972 it became the Federation for Community Planning. By 1919 it had given up solicitation of funds and by 1966 their allocation also, evolving into a specialized community planning agency. The collection consists of views of various activities sponsored by the Federation for Community Planning. Some of the activities pictured include the Foster Home Recruiting Center, Mass Blood Testing Program, TB Clinic van, and Golden Age Hobby shows. Also included are individual and group portraits of those associated with the Federation, including Edward D. Lynde, executive secretary, and an album presented to him on his retirement.

 Abstract:  Henry L. Zucker was a native of Cleveland, Ohio, and a social worker. In 1946, he became the Associate Director of the Jewish Welfare Federation of Cleveland. He was Executive Director (1948-1965) and Executive Vice President (1965-1975) of the Jewish Community Federation. Under his leadership, it became one of the most successful community federations in the United States. Zucker also served as a consultant to other Jewish federations and local and national social organizations. The collection consists of biographical information, correspondence, newsletter and newspaper clippings, and writings which document Zucker's career in social service.

 Abstract:  John Whittlesey Walton was a prominent Cleveland, Ohio, businessman and philanthropist. The nephew of Charles Whittlesey, Walton started a ship chandlery business and co-founded the Upson-Walton Company in 1893. In 1867, Walton was one of the men responsible for the revival of the YMCA in Cleveland. From 1874-1926, Walton was actively involved in charity, serving during this period as treasurer of the Bethel Associated Charities. Throughout his life, Walton was keenly interested in the field of sociology and in the emerging scientific approach to social work. His daughter, Gladys Walton, was involved in numerous dramatic and musical events. She married Lamson Jennings in 1919. The collection consists of 5 photograph albums and 9 color stereo transparencies. Four albums contain portraits of family members and friends of the Walton-Jennings families. Those pictured include members of the Lamson, Calhoun, Clark, Sturdevant, Curtis, Judd, Kinney, North, and Hart families. Some identified photographs are missing from the albums. The fifth album contains prints and photographs of the travels of John Whittlesey Walton to England, Florida, Toronto, New England, and Europe. One of the photograph albums includes a built-in music box. 7 color stereo transparencies of the Briggs Mansion on Overlook Road, Cleveland Heights, Ohio, taken in 1964 are included, as are 2 color stereo transparencies of a statue of a bear at Wade Park, taken in 1958.
